My Family Story in the late 70s at Secline Beach – North Lake Tahoe
My Father was notoriously cheap for a man who always had $1000 cash in his wallet. If you lived in Tahoe in the ’70s or ‘80s you had to drive to Reno for everything.
One day at Costco in Reno. My 13-year-old bother put a Fun Island on my dad’s orange push cart. I looked at that kid like he was crazy and trying to get us killed. He ignored my pleading looks.
I’ll be damned if my Dad paid for it and loaded it into the car without noticing! When we got home my Dad yelled at us, told us it was going back, and don’t touch it!
A week later my brother took it out of the box, destroyed the box, and we walked it down to Secline Beach to inflate it at the gas station. We then walked it down to the main beach to meet up with our friends.
It was awesome! That thing was a 7-foot circle of summer fun!

Then we went back to Costco…
A couple of weeks later we went back to Costco. My Dad forgot about returning the fun island. Do you know what my brother did? He placed oars on my Dad’s shopping flat this time.
You know, because we needed oars for the fun island. I almost cried, I was so scared. I was sure that at check out my Dad would end us with the oars when he saw them.
He didn’t see them. He paid for them, loaded them into the car, and Dad didn’t lose his mind until we were unloading at home. It was an epic explosion of anger and disbelief. My brother had more guts than I can even describe.
After the full-on yelling and cursing from Dad. We were told both items were being returned.
Dad had no idea that we had been using the fun island as we were hiding it in one of the outbuildings.
My brave brother opened those oars and we used them the very next day. It was the best summer! The only bummer was some boys from school tried to place the fun island over me in the water and I almost drowned. Jerks.
