Are there bodies dumped in Lake Tahoe? Of course, there are and we likely don’t know how many!

I grew up swimming in the lake and heard many stories of bodies dumped in the lake, for my childhood sanity I put those stories out of my mind so I could enjoy the water.

Chinese Railworker Mass Murder

Growing up on the North Shore of Lake Tahoe my mind was full of visions of bodies dumped in the Lake. I know, I was a weird kid. It never stopped me from swimming, boating, or snorkeling.

My Father told me many grisly stories. One popular story is about Chinese railroad workers. Hundreds of Chinese rail workers completed the railroad passing through Truckee.

Promised pay and citizenship it was a great opportunity then, after completing their work they were denied pay. Even worse, they were chained together and dumped in the middle of the lake.

Another story is that an independent filmmaker went down into the depth to film. When he surfaced he said he would not film it. He stated “The world was not ready to see what the US government did to these poor people. Jacques Cousteau

French explorer Jaques Cousteau is said to have done a deep dive to explore Lake Tahoe’s depths. He was a famed deep-sea explorer, it would only make sense he would want to explore the depths of Lake Tahoe.

The above quote about the world not being ready to see what’s down there is often attributed to Cousteau. Speculation is that he saw Tahoe Tessie, the famous Loch Ness-type monster, it’s also believed he saw hundreds of preserved bodies.

Mafia Killings

North Shore Lake Tahoe is well known for the Mob-run casinos that opened back in the day. Frank Sinatra once owned the ill-fated Cal-Neva casino and was a known associate of the Lake Tahoe-based mobsters.

Sam Giancana, a known Mafia boss out of Chicago was a guest of Sinatra at the Cal-Neva. Rumor has it that the body of Fredo Corleone, the brother of Michael Corleone (from The Godfather) got dumped in Lake Tahoe after he was shot.

According to my Father who was treated as the number one VIP by the casinos, many bodies were dumped in the lake by the mob.

My Father ran the switchboards for all phone calls in the ’40s and ‘50s so, he would tip off the casinos before the police could plan a raid. For this, he was welcome to some of the behind-the-scenes goings on at the casinos.

What happens to bodies dumped in Lake Tahoe?

The body of Donald Christopher Windecker was recovered after 17 years in the Lake. He died in a diving accident.

As the bacteria in our bodies start to digest us after death they produce gasses and it’s these gasses that cause a corpse to float. This process is retarded in Lake Tahoe as the cold prevents the bacteria from digesting us.

The only other thing that can destroy a body in Lake Tahoe is marine life.

Windecker was wearing a wetsuit at the time of his death so, none of his body was exposed to underwater life.

According to the El Dorado County Sheriff’s Office Windecker was very well preserved. Bryan Golmitz of the Sheriff’s Office said: “He looked 90 percent like a person, the physical form was there, he was very present[efn_note]https://www.rgj.com/story/news/crime/2015/06/02/fact-checker-is-lake-tahoe-filled-with-hundreds-of-preserved-bodies/28330081/.[/efn_note].”

Bodies in Lake Tahoe rarely float up to the surface. They do not often stay so well preserved either. Eventually, marine animals and their own bacteria will break them down.

This explains why a group of divers from the Undersea Voyager Project found no bodies after exploring the lake for a month. What they did find was 2000-year-old trees, boats, and undocumented species.
