The Echo Lake to Ralston Lake trail is an interesting route to reach Desolation Wilderness. The trail takes you through various landscapes, from forests to meadows, and offers stunning views of the surrounding mountains.

This exciting trail from Echo Lake to Ralston is approximately 6 miles roundtrip. The trailhead begins at the Inspiration Point Parking lot, next to the boat rental building at Echo Lake.

From the parking lot, walk west on the road towards Mt. Evans until you reach a small brown sign that says “Mt. Evans Wilderness Area.” The trail then follows along the side of Echo Lake before heading into the forests and meadows above.

Backpackers have two options from the Echo Lakes trailhead: either hike 2.5 miles along the lake’s northeastern side or pay a ticket to ride the water shuttle across Lower and Upper Echo Lakes, dropping them out at the Desolation Wilderness boundary.

Your trip is shortened by three miles if you use the Echo Lakes Resort’s boat taxi during the summer. This service is provided for a small price.

Beyond a brief rise through Haypress Meadows and dense forests of hemlock, trekkers can continue on the Pacific Crest Trail to Lake of the Woods and Lake Marjorie after the junction to Ralston, Tamarack, and Cagwin lakes.
