What is the Difference Between the North Shore and South Shore of Lake Tahoe

by | Apr 30, 2023 | Lake Tahoe

As the Tahoe locals say, North Shore and South Shore are entirely different worlds. I expect some locals will want to fist-fight me over the map I created here.

I personally draw the north/south line based on what people who live in those areas consider themselves…either part of the north shore or south shore.

If you’re planning a trip to Lake Tahoe, there are two beautiful “regions” to choose from, the North Shore and the South Shore.

For some reason, the 2 sides of the lake are not called East and West, which would make sense only to those who did not grow up here.

Yes, we are a funny bunch, us Lake Tahoe locals!

As a visitor, you may have no idea that the locals consider these to be almost like 2 different planets.

Both sides of the lake are home to breathtaking views, beautiful beaches, and hiking trails, some incredible resorts, and a host of fun recreational activities.

And, when you talk with anyone local, you WILL hear them refer to one of the “shores” or the other.

Please note that there is no such thing as a border between the two. There is just an idea of what they are, and where they are as well.

To make things even more confusing, you will see a lot of information about “South Lake” and “North Lake,” and there is no official definition of any of these terms.

However, locals will argue endlessly about where this line which does not actually exist, is.

North Shore? North Lake? South Shore? South Lake?

We’ll let you in on the real stuff, below:

One “Side” is More Laid Back, the Other is the Party Side

The North Shore of Lake Tahoe is famous for its gorgeous lake views, mountain biking trails, hiking, and other outdoor activities.

The North Shore features a variety of activities such as skiing and water sports, and perhaps the most notable of all are the incredible and beautiful beaches.

It’s likely the perfect side of Lake Tahoe for outdoor adventures and experiencing nature. North Shore is a bit calmer and more relaxed.

But as soon as the sun sets, you’ll find the South Shore to be ready to party. It has a lot of bars and clubs that are perfect for attracting young people to the area, which is something that draws people from all over California and Northern Nevada.

Some people (only non-locals though!) refer to South Shore as the “Las Vegas of Tahoe” because of what it has to offer, which will give you a better understanding of what this area is like.

We have to giggle at this a bit because the gaming is far smaller than that in Reno, and nothing like Las Vegas.

But it’s very fun to be able to go to a real beach and a casino on the same day!

North Shore is definitely not the party side!

The North Shore holds a much more subdued nightlife than other parts of the Lake.

However, it does offer excellent restaurants, wine bars, breweries, and ski activities that are accessible nearby.

You won’t have any issues with traffic unless it’s a Holiday, or July 4th, making North Lake Tahoe a fantastic option for families.

Locals refer to living life on the North Shore as “Tahoe Time,” which is a slower pace and it’s common for all to take time to slow down, enjoy what life has to offer, and live in the moment!

Similar to the North side, South Lake Tahoe also offers a lot of outdoor recreation.

People enjoy the abundance of outdoor activities that can be done in and around Lake Tahoe, including hiking at Heavenly in the morning (summertime only!) and biking on a wide network of trails.

In the Winter both “sides” of the lake are filled with people enjoying all of the winter sports.

North Shore and South Shore have tons of Festivals and Events

South Lake Tahoe has not only managed to preserve the mountain lifestyle but has also taken a step away from this and added some of the fun of city life.

South Shore hosts many festivals that include Valhalla Arts and the Music and Theatre Festival.

Valhalla Arts is a festival that takes place in October with live entertainment, contemporary arts, and more.

Every year, the City of South Lake Tahoe hosts the Music and Theatre Festival.

This event attracts thousands of visitors from all over the world and is known as one of the best music and theatre festivals in North America.

The festival features a wide array of different genres, from rock and pop to jazz and classical music, with a variety of live performances for attendees to enjoy.

There will always be something entertaining happening in South Lake Tahoe, from major cultural events to exclusive parties celebrating the wonders that surround this amazing destination.

But then again, on the North Shore side, Commons Beach hosts a summer concert series that is pretty amazing.

As a person who grew up on the North Shore, I had to laugh as South Shore calls their visitors center “Tahoe Visitors Center” as if they are ALL the lake has to offer.

The North Shore calls it the North Shore Visitors Center… because we know who we are. (see how we get!?)

Summer and Winter on North Shore and South Shore

South Lake Tahoe is a mecca for outdoor adventures in the summer. With lakes and trails to explore, visitors will never be bored here.

There are many exciting activities to enjoy in the great outdoors in South Lake Tahoe, such as parasailing, party boats, and guided kayaking.

Moreover, the Desolation Wilderness and Mount Tallac trail systems offer great long-distance hiking in the basin which are located just outside of South Lake Tahoe, headed north on Hwy 89. But do not call this area “north shore!” Yes, it’s very confusing.

Summertime in the South Shore region also offers amazing helicopter tours of Lake Tahoe.

The tours provide breathtaking views of the lake, Heavenly Valley Ski Resort, and other famous landmarks near the area such as Boreal Mountain Resort and Camp Richardson Historic Site.

Enjoying the more laid-back aspects of skiing at Heavenly, Sierra-at-Tahoe, or Kirkwood during the winter in South Lake Tahoe is about feeling the freedom and excitement that comes with spending time on vacation.

The best backcountry skiing can also be found here, particularly in and around the Kirkwood region. Additionally, there are outstanding locations for snowmobiling too.

Scenic Beaches

We have written extensively on all of the beaches around the lake.

You will find almost any water access to be gorgeous, and it won’t matter much which “side” of the lake you choose to visit.

As a North Shore girl, I personally prefer the beaches on the North Shore of Lake Tahoe.

But please do not let my biased opinion sway your choice. Truly, every beach has some of the best views in the world.

Now that you know more about the “two sides,” it’s time to plan your visit:
