Speedboat Beach, AKA Bucks Beach

Speedboat Beach is a small, secluded beach located near the end of Brockway Point, also known by the locals as Bucks Beach. The beach is known for its large rock formations and stunning blue waters.

The large aesthetic granite rocks lining the length of the beach and continuing a few hundred yards southwards out into Lake Tahoe off the west end add to the landscape. Visitors to Speedboat Beach can find either a small or large sand beach, depending on the lake water level.

This stunning Speedboat Beach in Lake Tahoe is perfect for families because it offers breathtaking views, sandy shores, and enough space for kids to play.

There are no picnic or grilling facilities in the area, but you can lay a blanket on the soft sand and enjoy your stay. It can be a considerable walk to the beach from your parking place.

Tip: You will want to watch out for children playing around the boulder as there can be broken glass from partygoers the night before.

As a teenager, I would snorkel there using my fanny pack to collect broken glass and get it out of the lake. I started this pastime after seeing a child cut their foot at this beach.

You can also take a stroll along the beach, go for a swim, or simply relax and soak up the sun.

The beach features shallows with warmer water, making it an excellent beach for young children to swim and explore the area.

While this is a safe place for children, you do want to be aware of kids jumping off of boulders. Be sure to check for a safe, clean place for them to land in the water. There are submerged boulders that can be hazardous for divers and boats.

Activities

There are plenty of things to do in Speedboat Beach, but some of the best activities have to do with exploring the clear water.

You can take a boat out or go kayaking or paddle boarding. There are no rentals available at this beach, and carrying your own down there may be challenging.

It’s a great way to get up close and personal with all the beauty Speedboat Beach offers. The water is so clear that it’s perfect for snorkeling and exploring the marine life underneath.

As a teenager, I would snorkel there using my fanny pack to collect broken glass and get it out of the lake. I started this pastime after seeing a child cut their foot at this beach. The underwater views of the boulders here are lovely but, there isn’t too much marine life at this level of the lake but, you will see a few crayfish and some tiny minnows. The Crayfish are delicious by the way! Make sure you have all proper fishing licenses if you want to try and catch some.

If you’re lucky, you may find agates and carnelians nestled along the sandy beach. As a young teen, I found many agates snorkeling at this location. The only one I removed permanently is the one I placed on my Dad’s gravestone in Tahoe City. I am not advocating for taking anything off of the land on or around this beautiful lake.

Parking Space

If you’re planning on spending a day at Speedboat Beach, parking space is quite limited since the beach is located in a small neighborhood. Beware of parking on the side streets, as the local homeowners may call to have your car towed, as it is private parking only.

Tip: Your best option is to park at or near the Cal-Neva parking lot or take advantage of public transit options.

Either way, it will be a heck of a walk back uphill to your car. Although the area has limited amenities, you can expect chemical toilet facilities in the summer.

This hidden paradise is quite challenging to find, especially if you don’t know where you’re going. No signage or markers point to the beach, so you must know the direction before starting your journey.
