If you’re on the hunt for a beautiful and family-friendly beach in Lake Tahoe, Commons Beach should absolutely be on your list. This beach is located on the west side of Lake Tahoe in the heart of Tahoe City.
We still call this “North Lake Tahoe” or “North Shore” even though it’s actually on the west shore.
It boasts stunning views that the whole family will love. Not to mention, it’s the perfect spot to relax and take in all that Lake Tahoe has to offer.
There is metered parking, and you’ll have to walk down steep stairs to access the beach. So, plan to park somewhere else and walk there as parking is very limited. This beach and its location are worth the walk for your family.
Useful Tip
I personally recommend you take the stairs at either end of the beach if you have children or older people with you. I have a questionable knee from skiing moguls and playing soccer while growing up in Tahoe. The side stairs are much more accessible.
There is a nice turnabout for drop off and pick up of beach supplies. The expansive four acres of the beach is an excellent place to get a tan, soak in the clear blue water (if you don’t mind cold water), or just take in the spectacular view the area offers.
The beach’s vastness allows plenty of space to find your own little spot to relax and enjoy the day. The sparkling water and soft sand are inviting, and the views are simply breathtaking.
Farmers Market
The Farmers Market is every Thursday from May to October, and the parking situation is outrageous. While the Farmers’ Market is going on, don’t even think about getting a close parking spot.
There are free concerts here from June to September. Bring blankets and chairs as the shows start at 4 pm and go on to 7 pm. It’s best to get there early with a cooler of food and spend the day.
Be ready to change into warm clothes as it can get cold even on summer nights. There are no dogs or other pets allowed here. The food and beverages that are for sale during the concerts are reasonably priced.
I used to love bringing an inner tube and watching concerts while floating in the lake. It’s a great way to get out of the crowd. Growing up here, I was also acclimated to the cold water. This might be too cold for many of you though.
Buy Water Shoes
You will want water shoes for your family as it can be rocky here. The sand is not naturally occurring here, and it is trucked in. I had rigid Tahoe kid feet, and I still wanted water shoes for this beach. In the ’80s, we walked everywhere, often barefoot. Get water shoes.
You can also enjoy various water activities on this Lake Tahoe beach, such as kayaking and stand-up paddle boarding. There are many rental shops in the area that can provide you with the equipment you need to enjoy these activities.
The coastal playground at Commons Beach in Tahoe City, set beneath tall trees, is a popular destination for families. It contains separate play structures designed for older and younger kids to play on and a unique climbing rock.
Parents can enjoy the scenic view while providing great fun for their young children.
Commons Beach has a Big Grassy Area
The vast grassy area surrounding the beach, ideal for picnics, sunbathing, or playing, is one of Commons Beach’s best features.
There are also designated picnic and barbecue sites if you’re looking for a more convenient area to enjoy and cook your food. These sites usually have all the necessary amenities like tables, grills, and even bathrooms.
Some of my favorite memories are of taking children down from the local elementary school on field trips. In October, the kids get to go down to the beach, and each one receives a pumpkin.
The area around Lake Tahoe is full of scenic views that can be enjoyed by taking a bike ride on one of the many bike paths. These paths provide a great way to see the area and get some exercise while enjoying the beauty of the lake.
When visiting Commons Beach, you can check the calendar of events to catch a fun summertime concert that features live music and entertainment.
The summer concerts are usually held on Saturday evenings and are the perfect way to unwind after a long week. You can bring a blanket or lawn chair and relax while enjoying the music.
Food and drinks are also usually available for purchase, so you can make a night of it!
